PAYLOAD MATTERS: How load affects wear on the all-new Mahindra Bolero MaXX range of Pik-Ups

Buy a bakkie for the wrong job and every kilometre costs more than it should. Tyres wear early, brakes fade sooner and suspension parts take strain they were never built for. Mahindra's answer is the new Bolero MaXX range of Pik-Ups, three models built around one idea: match the payload to the work and the vehicle lasts longer.

What payload actually means

Payload is the maximum weight a bakkie can carry safely: cargo, tools, stock and anything else in the loadbin. Exceed it and every part built around that limit, from tyres to axles, takes strain it was never designed for. The new Bolero MaXX range offers three payload tiers, instead of one stretched across every type of business.

The cost of overloading

Arrive Alive, SA's road safety information resource, says overloading can cause tyres to run hotter, wear faster and possibly fail without warning. Suspension components take the strain first, absorbing loads they weren't built for until the weakest point gives way. Premature brake wear, loose, unresponsive steering and the loadbin sagging are clear signs a bakkie is carrying more than it should.

Of course none of this is likely to show up immediately. A bakkie can run overloaded for months before there’s a problem with a tyre or a bush wears through, and by then the repair bill will need to cover far more than just that part.

A Pik-Up for every type of business

The new Bolero MaXX City 1.3T is the every-day delivery entry point, with a 1.3 tonne payload and a 2 500 x 1 700 x 398 mm loadbin. It's built for narrow streets, busy depots and frequent stop-start delivery runs. It's also one of the few business-ready bakkies under R200 000.

Step up to the core workhorse for SMEs and owner-managed fleets – the new Bolero MaXX City 1.5T. The payload rises to 1.5 tonnes with a longer 2 640 mm loadbin, air conditioning, ABS and a driver seat with recliner, slider and height adjustment. This is the perfect solution for increased carrying confidence without moving into heavy-duty territory.

At the top of the line sits the new Bolero MaXX 1.7 Heavy Duty, rated for a massive 1.7 tonne payload with a 3 050 x 1 800 x 650 mm load bin. A 60 kW, 220 Nm 2.5-litre diesel, 210 mm ground clearance and leaf-spring suspension give it the pulling strength for heavier loads, longer routes and rougher terrain.

Every payload tier in the new Bolero MaXX Pik-Up range is engineered around a specific type of business and the load it carries daily. All three can be driven with a standard Code B licence, and all three carry a 4-year/120 000 km warranty.

Choose the right payload, for an investment that pays off.

Protecting your investment in a new bakkie starts with matching its payload to the job. A business running the MaXX City 1.5T within its 1.5 tonne limit puts far less strain on tyres, brakes and suspension, than one forcing the same loads onto an undersized vehicle. Choose the tier that fits the work for an investment that keeps paying dividends.

Whether the job calls for the 1.3T, the 1.5T or the heavy duty 1.7T, the right choice of payload from the new Mahindra Bolero MaXX range, is the difference between a bakkie that keeps going year after year, and one that spends more time in the shop than on the road.
